FROM: "BEHOLD" Display Coordinator
TO: Exhibitors
Thank you for agreeing to mount a display for the Bell Education Hands Off Learning
Display project at convention.
The Convention Committee has agreed to supply tables necessary to display the BEHOLD exhibit Security will be provided at all times by members of the ABA. Set-up time will be Sunday and the first time for the display to be open will be from __ till __ on Sunday.
Following are some mounting details.
The hinged three-board triptych backgrounds for the displays will all be the same. They are comprised of three 16" x 32" sheets of 1/4 inch masonite pegboard, hinged together at the sides with shoe-laces. (I finally decided on shoelaces rather than metal hinges because they make it possible for the 3 boards to be folded flat together for shipment etc. - and they do look 0. K.) The triptychs should be set up so that the distance across the front of the open wings is 32" and the depth from front to back is 15". That way six —of them could fit together on two standard 30" x 96" hotel tables, but there is usually more space than that.
You may mount your display on your triptych in any way you choose, or cover your boards with paper or cloth (but please don't use glue or paint because we hope to use them for years) You may push #3 fasteners through holes in the paper and peg board and spread them in the back. Or you may use standard 1/4" pegboard shelf brackets with two prongs 2" apart to mount your bells on the pegboard. They make little shelves about 3" square, which are fine for single bells. If you should want a longer shelf for more bells, you could make one. Colored cloth may be used to add color.
You can put bells on the table at the bottom of your triptych, or build up a little foundation for them there with blocks etc., but note that the whole display cannot be more than 15" deep. Since the viewers will be so close to the displays, they should be able to read typewritten material. However, they will also be able to touch the displays, and that might be a problem. No one will get into the BEHOLD room except ABA members, and when the room is closed, our displays will have the same security provisions as the bells in the sales room. I have never heard of a theft of bells at a convention. Some folks wire their bells to the pegboard with almost invisible wire -mainly for stability in case somebody should jar the table - but also to make them harder to pick up.
Please put a title at the top of your display, and also have your name there someplace.
You might also want to include a little bibliography of references - to indicate any research you did on your project and that you didn't make all that stuff up! But that is not necessary.
If you need brackets and fasteners to mount your bells, just buy them at your local hardware store, and send the coordinator the bill. Shelves have been made from scraps of pegboard. You may cut your own, or even use heavy cardboard.
It is our hope that other ABA folks will be so enthusiastic about the project that they will
start thinking about what they could display next year, and so this will continue to be an ongoing annual project - to help people learn more about bells.
Also, when you get home from convention, you will have a ready-made exhibit for your local library.
If you have any questions, please contact the coordinator right away.
Thanks for your help,
BEHOLD Coordinator
